“Walk like a cat, move like a river, be still as a mountain”
-from the Tai Chi Classics
Kenn Chase and Kevin Burke, who have worked together since 1998, will be teaming up to offer a special, four-hour intensive workshop on the short form of T’ai Chi Ch’uan on Sunday July 14th in Aptos California. The workshop is offered to beginners and advanced students of the Yang Style health form, which emerged from the Choy family system, and will include an in depth exploration of the 54 poses of the practice.
The first hour will focus on Qigong warm-ups and the first several postures of the form. The second hour will include Feldenkrais floor work led by Master Kenn Chase. During the third and fourth hour, the class will move outdoors and break into two groups. Those new to the form will work with Kevin Burke, and more advanced students will work with Master Kenn Chase.
Master Chase, an internationally acclaimed Yang style Tai Chi teacher, has been teaching for almost 50 years. As the first person to teach Tai Chi at Esalen Institute (1969) he worked with several Mind-Body masters including: Moshe Feldenkrais, Charlotte Selver, Fritz Perls, and Ida Rolf. He is one of the only Tai Chi teachers in the world who is also a certified Feldenkrais® practitioner, and he has combined these methods to create Integral Way Tai Chi™-an East/West approach to traditional Tai Chi. His unique and personable approach allows for all learners to benefit from his teaching. Kenn’s experience includes teaching Integral Way Tai Chi™ classes for hospitals, corporations, universities, treatment centers and in community settings internationally. He is currently based in Marin County, CA.
Kevin Burke began studies of comparative spiritual philosophies as an undergraduate at Stanford University. Initiated into Raja Yoga a few years after graduating, he continued his studies and practice of yoga and meditation. His research included readings in Buddhism, Hinduism, Sufism, Kabala, Native American Spirituality, and Christian mysticism. Kevin began studying with Master Chase in 1998. After four years, he began to assist Master Chase’s workshops at Esalen and soon after that began to teach on his own at Esalen Institute, Post Ranch Inn, and Ventana Inn in Big Sur. Kevin holds a current State of California Teaching Credential and is a State of California Certified Massage Therapist with special interest in Energy Work including Reiki and Matrix Energetics. He now lives in Aptos, and teaches ongoing weekly T’ai Chi Ch’uan at Synergy Dance Fitness Tai Chi in Aptos.
When learned correctly and performed regularly, T’ai Chi Ch’uan can be a positive part of an overall approach to improving health. The benefits of T’ai Chi Ch’uan are decreased stress and anxiety, increased aerobic capacity, energy, stamina, flexibility, balance, agility, muscle strength and definition.
Some evidence indicates that T’ai Chi Ch’uan may also help enhance quality of sleep and immune system heath, lower cholesterol and blood pressure, improve joint pain, improve symptoms of congestive heart failure, and improve overall well-being in older adults.
